Bangladesh ranks 8th in remittance earning: World Bank

Bangladesh is the 8th among top 10 remittance-earning countries in the world, a World Bank (WB) report says.

According to WB’s Migration and Development Brief 2016, Bangladesh has ranked 8th in the world at around $13.7 billion remittance earning in 2016.

The South Asia region (SAR) witnessed an estimated decline of 6.4 percent in the 2017, The World Bank, said in its latest report.

India ranks as the largest remittance-receiving country in the South Asian countries, the report says.  

It said, “An increase of only 2.0 per cent is expected in 2017 where Bangladesh’s remittance growth forecast at 2.4 per cent, India’s at 1.9 per cent, Pakistan’s at 1.4 per cent, and Sri Lanka’s at 1.3 per cent.”

It is mentionable, Around 23.5 lakh Bangladeshi expatriates are now working in 157 countries of the world. And around 5 lakh Bangladeshi leave the country to work abroad every year. 

Bangladesh’s economy depends on the emigrants’ remittances which covers 66 percent of total foreign reserve.
