Five people were burnt to death as fire broke out a slum of Club Bazar area at Golapganj upazila in Sylhet on Sunday at 3.15am.
Of them, four deceased were identified as Sebu Begum, 40, wife of Mochokondor, a resident of Ponairchak village, Taslima Begum, 25, wife of Fozlu Miah, a resident of Khalermukh village, her children Tahsin, 2, and Sebul Miah, 16, a resident of Dokkhin Noai village.
A lightning struck a gas connection adjacent to a room at Lailumia colony in the area early in the morning, causing a fire that engulfed the building, said Tonoy Biswas, Assistant Director of Sylhet fire service.
In this connection, Fazlul Haque Shiblee, officer-in-charge of Golapganj Model Police Station, said members of fire service recovered the bodies of the deceased and sent to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College and Hospital for autopsy.
