Stocks open the week down

Stocks continued to witness a downward trend as major indices on the two bourses-Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) and Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE)-were in red zone on Sunday, the first day of the week, reports BSS.

Turnover, an important indicator of the market, rose to Taka 531.68 crore from Thursday's Taka 474.18 crore on the DSE. The daily trade volume also jumped to 15.56 crore share from previous session's 12.95 crore shares. 

DSEX, the prime index of the DSE, lost 4.41 points to settle at 5,694.28 over the previous session. The blue-chip DS30 also followed the same trend with 8.46 points down at 2119.86. But the Shariah DSES closed the day with 1.03 points up at 1319.72.

At the DSE, out of the day's 336 securities, prices of 175 securities closed higher against 125 losing issues while 36 remained unchanged.

The top five gainers at DSE were Shepherd Industries, Regent Text, Sino Bangla, SEML Lecture Equity MF and BSS Cables while the top five losers were Al-Arafa Bank, Mithun Knit, Uttara Bank, Takaful Insurance and Dulamia Cotton. 

The port city bourse - CSE - also saw downward trend and CSE All Share Price Index- CASPI-lost 24.88 points to stand at 17,570.29.

Of the issues traded, 128 gained, 83 declined and 24 issues remained unchanged. 

A total of 89.16 lakh shares and mutual fund issues changed hands for Taka 22.59 crore.
