The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and local residents' firm stance have forced India to halt the construction of barbed wire fences along the border, said Home Affairs Adviser, Lieutenant General (retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury on Sunday.
Speaking at a press conference on Bangladesh-India border issues at the Secretariat, the adviser stated that India had recently begun constructing barbed wire fences at five locations along the border. However, due to the strong position of the BGB and local people, India was compelled to stop the work at those sites.
He also mentioned that during the previous government's tenure from 2010 to 2023, India had carried out some unauthorised activities along the border, which should not have been done. However, the previous government had allowed such actions.
