A case has been filed following an attack on a group of ethnic minority students in front of the National Curriculum and Textbook Board (NCTB) in the Motijheel area of Dhaka.
Jagadish Chakma, president of the Hill Students' Council, Dhaka Metropolitan branch, filed the case at Motijheel police station against 16 named individuals and 284 unnamed individuals.
The accused individuals named in the case are: Arif Al Khabir (38), Md Abbas (24), Md Ziaul Haque (28), Mohiuddin Rahat (23), Md Yakub Mojumder (20), Shahadat Farazi Sakib (35), Shahidur Rahman (25), Shawkat (21), Rajan Hossain (20), Wafi (20), Monwar (24), Muhan (20), Zihad (22), Sajib (25), Abdul Malek (28), and Golam Ali Naim (24).
Earlier on Thursday, police arrested two individuals, Arif Al Khabir and Mohammad Abbas, in connection with the incident. The two are currently in jail, confirmed Mezbah Uddin, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the police station, on Friday.
According to the case details, on the morning of January 15, a march organised by the 'Aggrieved Indigenous Students and People' left Dhaka University's Raju Sculpture and headed towards the NCTB headquarters in Motijheel. However, when the procession reached under the Motijheel Metro Rail Station, a clash broke out with a group carrying the banner of ‘Students for Sovereignty’.
As a result, 15 individuals, including Ananto Bikash Dhamai, Don Jetra, Reng Yong Gro, Jewel Ghiotonias, Rupaiya Shrestha Tonchongya, Tony Chitran, and Futonta Chakma, were seriously injured. The case further states that Rupaiya Shrestha Tonchongya, Don Jetra, and Jewel Ghiotonias are currently fighting for their lives in Bangladesh Specialized Hospital, while Ananto Bikash Dhamai and Futonta Chakma have received six stitches on their heads. The others are receiving treatment at the hospital or at home.
