The Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) suspended its directive on Sunday, which mandated the filing of cases against those charging fares higher than the meter rate in petrol or CNG-run auto-rickshaws.
This decision came six days after the directive was issued on February 10, following a road blockade staged by auto-rickshaw drivers in the capital.
The BRTA informed the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) about the suspension of the directive via a letter.
After the directive was issued, auto-rickshaw drivers protested by staging sit-ins at various locations in the capital last Thursday. They resumed their protests on Sunday morning. In response to the ongoing protests, the BRTA decided to suspend the directive.
