1,400 looted firearms, 2.5 lakh round of ammo still unrecovered

Almost 1,400 fireamrs and 2.5 lakh rounds of ammunition looted after August 5 remain unrecovered. The government has sought assistance from deputy commissioners to help recover these weapons and ammunition.

Lieutenant General (Retd) Abdul Hafiz, Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser, shared this information with the media on Tuesday after a session on the Ministry of Defense and Armed Forces Division at the Deputy Commissioner (DC) conference at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in Dhaka.

Abdul Hafiz stated, "I discussed the challenges deputy commissioners will face in the future. For example, I mentioned that nearly 1,400 looted firearms and 250,000 rounds of ammunition are still unaccounted for. These arms and ammunition could still be in the districts and may fall into the hands of terrorists who could use them."

He added, "The autocratic regime and its associates are regrouping in various locations and organizing activities that could destabilize the country, so vigilance is essential."

When asked about further operations following Operation Devil Hunt, he replied, "Around 6,000 firearms were looted, and of the 600,000 rounds of ammunition, 250,000 are still unrecovered. This indicates that many weapons have been recovered, and the remaining ones will be gradually retrieved through ongoing operations."

Regarding the upcoming challenges during Ramadan, Abdul Hafiz noted that deputy commissioners would face three main issues: controlling commodity prices, managing potential electricity shortages, and ensuring farmers receive timely irrigation and agricultural supplies.
