The 13th Jatiya Sangsad elections are set to take place in either December 2025 or March 2026.
Shafiqul Alam, press secretary to the chief adviser, shared this update during a briefing at the Foreign Service Academy on Bailey Road in the capital on Monday, February 24, 2025.
Speaking on the matter, Shafiqul, the de facto spokesperson of the interim government, said that the final decision would hinge on the consensus of political parties.
He noted that the parties would consider the prevailing conditions to determine the most suitable timing for the elections.
Shafiqul remarked that there has been considerable discussion surrounding the upcoming national parliament election while the chief adviser and advisers of the interim government have shared their views.
The chief adviser previously highlighted two potential timelines, noting that if political parties prefer minimal reforms, the election could take place in December, said Shafiqul, if they opt for a slightly longer preparation period, it would be scheduled for the first half of 2025.
He said a practical challenge arises with the weather: the nor’westers typically begin in April, followed by the monsoon season starting in June. “These conditions make those three months less favourable for holding an election. Consequently, it seems most likely that the election will occur in December, or at the latest, by March,” said Shafiqul.
