A Dhaka court has ordered the imprisonment of three individuals—Shakil Khandaker, Jewel Khandaker, and Shakil Ahmed—for attempting to loot and vandalize a Gulshan house.
The house belong to former wife of Tanvir Imam, son of the late HT Imam, a former political adviser to ex-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ziadur Rahman issued the order on Wednesday, March 5, following a hearing.
Gulshan Police Station Sub-Inspector Md Farid Hossain, the case’s investigation officer, had sought a 10-day remand for each accused, while their lawyer requested bail and opposed the remand.
The judge rejected both pleas, directing the trio to jail instead.
According to case details, on March 4 at 11:50pm, a group of 14–15 people stormed the house on Road 2 in Gulshan, vandalising furniture and assaulting two residents. The intruders demanded to know what was inside.
Shakil Khandaker broke into a cupboard and stole a gold chain, Jewel Khandaker took another gold chain, and Shakil Ahmed snatched a gold anklet and a hand ring—totalling 2.8 annas of gold worth Tk 3 lakh. Others trashed items from the cupboard, scattering them on the floor. A case was filed at Gulshan Police Station on March 5.
Meanwhile, the Chief Adviser’s Press Wing said preliminary findings reveal Shakil Ahmed, a former caretaker of the property, spread rumours of Tk 200–300 crore hidden inside, inciting 20–25 individuals to raid the house under the pretext of a “search”.
The Ministry of Home Affairs condemned the incident, which occurred near midnight, stressing that no one should take the law into their own hands.
The press wing urged citizens to report suspected crimes to police stations and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to upholding law and order.
