The National Revolutionary Council (NRC) has called for the resignation of Law Adviser Dr Asif Nazrul, blaming him for the swift bail of Mustafa Asif, arrested for harassing a Muslim Dhaka University student.
The NRC claims this reflects a broader pattern of releasing extremists under Nazrul’s tenure.
In a joint statement on Thursday, NRC political head Md Anisur Rahman and Member Secretary Hasan Mohammad Arif alleged that Mustafa Asif, who harassed a student during Ramadan over her attires, was bailed out within 24 hours of his arrest.
They described an orchestrated sequence: the student reported the incident on Facebook, then to the university proctor, leading to Asif’s arrest by fellow students and confession in public.
Shahbagh Police detained him, but extremists allegedly pressured the station for eight hours, chanting religious slogans.
The victim later withdrew her case, and Asif was released on bail, greeted with flowers and the Quran—an act the NRC labels a “pre-planned drama.”
The NRC questioned Nazrul’s role, asserting, “Since Dr Asif Nazrul became Law Adviser, top terrorists, militants, criminals, and harassers have been bailed out repeatedly. Mustafa Asif’s release in a non-bailable case amid extremist demands is the latest example. Nazrul cannot evade responsibility.”
They accused him of enabling a “deep-rooted plan” to foment extremism and violence among Muslims, demanding a probe.
