Law and order yet to improve as desired, says Nahid

Nahid Islam, convener of the newly formed National Citizens Party (NCP), emphasised the need for police autonomy amid rising unrest.

“The police must be allowed to do their job—we cannot take the law into our own hands,” he said.

“The law and order situation hasn’t improved as we’d hoped. Police must be proactive, and we must refrain from vigilantism.”

He spoke on Thursday, March 6, before the NCP launched a month-long ‘Iftar for Masses’ for underprivileged communities on Eskaton Garden Road in the capital.

Nahid outlined a collective vision: “We’ll share joy and sorrow with the people in the days ahead. We fought together on the streets, and our future will be united— thriving or struggling as one. Together, we’ll push Bangladesh forward.”

He urged citizens to foster peace, harmony, and tolerance, adding, “We expect the government to control commodity prices during Ramadan, ensuring affordable Eid shopping, safe travel, and secure roads.”

On NCP’s plans, he noted, “We’ve just begun organizing. During Ramadan, we’ll focus on drafting our constitution and planning ahead, avoiding major events. Nationwide activities may start post-Ramadan.”
