Disappearance commission’s term extended until June 30

The term of the Inquiry Commission on Enforced Disappearances, which was formed to investigate individuals who were victims of enforced disappearances by law enforcement agencies during the tenure of the Awami League government, has been extended until June 30.

The extension of the commission's term by an additional 3.5 months was announced on Monday, March 17, through a gazette notification issued by the Cabinet Division, effective from March 15.

Under the Commission of Inquiry Act of 1956, the government established the commission on August 27 of last year to investigate incidents of enforced disappearances that occurred between January 6, 2009, and August 5, 2024.

The commission, consisting of five members, is chaired by retired High Court Division Justice Moinul Islam Chowdhury.

Originally tasked with completing its investigation and submitting a report within three months, the commission's deadline was extended several times, with the last extension ending on March 14.
