Azizur Rahman Bachchu, father of Information and Broadcasting Adviser Mahfuj Alam, was attacked in Ramganj of Lakshmipur on Sunday evening (March 30).
The incident occurred at Mahfuj Alam’s home in Narayanpur Molla Bari.
Following the attack, Anti-Discrimination Student Movement staged a protest march in Ramganj upazila town at around 10:30pm on Sunday, demanding the arrest of those responsible.
Azizur Rahman, who serves as the Organizing Secretary of Isapur Union BNP, was reportedly assaulted at his residence in Narayanpur village of Isapur Union earlier that evening.
According to local sources, the attack stemmed from a dispute involving BNP-Chhatra Dal leaders and activists, who allegedly attempted to attack the house of Mehedi Manjur, Vice President of the Ramganj Upazila unit Chhatra League, who happens to be nephew of Azizur Rahman.
When Azizur Rahman intervened to stop them, a faction became enraged and assaulted him.
Azizur Rahman sustained injuries to his hand and was later treated at the Upazila Health Complex before returning home.
Upazila Chhatra League Vice President Mehedi Manju said,"I have never harmed anyone through politics. Yet, I am being targeted. I had come home in the afternoon to see my sick mother. BNP activists then attacked my house. I had left just before they arrived. My uncle, Azizur Rahman, was attacked while trying to stop them."
When contacted, a female family member, who did not identify herself, confirmed that Azizur Rahman is now in stable condition and at home.
Ramganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abul Bashar confirmed that a clash broke out between two groups in front of Azizur Rahman’s house. When he attempted to de-escalate the situation, one group attacked him in anger.
"He was injured in the hand and taken to the hospital for treatment. I was present at the hospital during the protest march. However, no formal complaint has been filed at the police station yet," said OC Abul Bashar.
