Mohammad Sufiur Rahman has been appointed as the new Special Assistant to Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus. He will serve in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
A gazette notification issued by the Cabinet Division on Sunday stated that Sufiur Rahman has been appointed with the rank of State Minister.
According to the Rules of Business, the executive authority of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been delegated to him to assist the Adviser on Foreign Affairs, the notification added.
The order further mentioned that during his tenure, Sufiur Rahman will enjoy the status, salary, allowances, and other benefits equivalent to those of a State Minister.
Sufiur Rahman is a career officer of the BCS (Foreign Affairs) cadre. During the previous Awami League government, he served as Bangladesh’s ambassador to four different countries. He joined the civil service in January 1991.
From October 2022 to May 2024, he served as Bangladesh’s Ambassador to Switzerland and the Permanent Representative to the United Nations and other international organizations in Geneva. Between 2018 and 2022, he was the High Commissioner to Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, and several South Pacific nations.
Earlier, from 2014 to 2017, he served as Bangladesh’s Ambassador to Myanmar, and from 2012 to 2014, as the High Commissioner to Sri Lanka.
Following his retirement, he joined North South University in July last year as a Senior Research Fellow at the South Asian Institute of Policy and Governance (SIPG).
