The International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) has issued a red notice against former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed.
Enamul Haque Sagar, Assistant Inspector General (Media and PR) at the Police Headquarters, confirmed the development to Jago News on Tuesday.
However, despite Sagar’s claim, Benazir Ahmed’s name did not appear under the “Wanted Persons” section on Interpol’s official website as of the latest check.
Sources revealed that Interpol is currently reviewing requests to issue red notices against 11 other individuals, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader.
As per procedure, following a court directive initiated by a request from the prosecution or an investigative agency, the National Central Bureau (NCB) of Bangladesh Police submits applications to Interpol for the issuance of red notices.
Officials from the NCB branch at Police Headquarters confirmed that, based on a request from the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), a Dhaka court directed the issuance of a red notice against Benazir Ahmed. Accordingly, an application was submitted to Interpol in February this year. In response to allegations of financial corruption and criminal offenses, Interpol issued the red notice on April 10 as an urgent measure.
In three separate phases, the NCB submitted applications to Interpol seeking red notices against 12 individuals, including the former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who reportedly left the country amid mass uprisings.
