Workers of Kohinoor Chemical Company blocked a road in the Tejgaon area of the capital on Tuesday (April 22) following allegations that one of their fellow worker insulted Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
The protest, which began around 2:45pm in front of Nabisco factory in Tejgaon, lasted for approximately four hours, causing significant traffic disruptions.
The agitated workers demanded the maximum punishment for the individual accused of the insult and called for strict legal action against him.
They strongly condemned the incident, describing it as shameful and unacceptable.
By 7:30pm, members of the police and army arrived at the scene and made a joint effort to disperse the protesters and reopen the road.
Despite their attempts to calm the demonstrators, tensions remained high.
Tejgaon Industrial Area Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Bikash Sarkar said that the road blockade was initiated by workers accusing a Hindu employee of the company of insulting Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
Following the protests, police tried to persuade the workers to relocate their demonstration to a nearby location. However, the workers refused to comply and continued blocking the road.
The prolonged blockade caused severe traffic congestion in Tejgaon and surrounding areas, disrupting the movement of all types of vehicles. Commuters faced significant inconvenience as a result of the impasse.
Authorities are working to address the workers' demands while attempting to restore normalcy in the area.
