M Moajjam Hossain, who was recently relieved of his duties as the Assistant Personal Secretary (APS) to Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan, Adviser to the Ministry of Local Government, has clarified that he resigned voluntarily in pursuit of a permanent career, and was not removed from his position.
He stated that some media outlets had misrepresented his resignation as a dismissal. In a Facebook post on Tuesday (April 22), Moajjam explained the reasons behind his resignation and shared images of both his resignation letter and the official notification issued by the Ministry of Public Administration.
In his post titled “Regarding My Resignation,” he wrote:
“During the 2018 quota reform movement, I was a first-year university student. I joined the movement and later became involved in student politics. I served as the convenor and later president of the Magura district branch of Chhatra Odhikar Parishad. I eventually held positions as Joint General Secretary of the Dhaka University unit and Senior Assistant Organizing Secretary of the central committee.
In 2023, I stepped away from politics to focus on my career and began preparing for the BCS exam. I passed the preliminary exam of the 46th BCS, as well as the preliminary stage of a bank officer (cash) exam. During the July-August mass uprising, I sat for the bank's written exam. After the movement, when Asif Mahmud joined the government as an adviser, I was offered the role of APS. From the outset, I made it clear that I would leave the post if it conflicted with my long-term career goals.
On March 10, 2025, the results of the bank's written exam were published, and I passed. With the BCS written exam scheduled for May 8 and the bank viva for May 22, I submitted my resignation to Adviser Asif Mahmud on March 25. He accepted it on April 8. Since such appointments and terminations are issued by the President, the official notification was released on April 22. However, some media misreported it as a dismissal.”
Moajjam also addressed several rumours circulating about him:
“There are claims that I own property in the US or a resort in Dubai. Some even allege I’m worth Tk 300 crore or Tk 3,000 crore. For public awareness, I want to clarify that if my wealth or that of my family or relatives has increased abnormally since August 5, legal complaints may be submitted. The adviser himself has encouraged such complaints.
During my time in office, many acquaintances from abroad gifted me clothes, and my phone was purchased by an expatriate alumni member from my department. I used government vehicles when necessary. Misrepresenting these facts would be unjust.
Today, someone phoned and told me that many members of his party are upset with me due to my behavior. While I served, I didn’t allow meetings without appointments, and I couldn’t meet everyone’s demands.
To them, I would say—managing so many people was never easy; it was my duty.
Now, I’m being labeled arrogant for not answering all calls or messages. These allegations are being exaggerated to paint me as a criminal. There were days when I could only eat after reaching home.
Anyway, I believe Allah will reward me for whatever I have done or tried to do for the country and its people, In Shaa Allah.”
Moajjam’s Facebook post was also shared on the official page of the Adviser to the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development, and Cooperatives, Asif Mahmud. The post read:
“Md Moajjam Hossain has resigned from the position of Assistant Personal Secretary to Honourable Adviser Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan. Upon acceptance of the resignation, the Ministry of Public Administration issued the official notification. Reports in the media regarding his dismissal are not true. If anyone has complaints against Mr. Moajjam Hossain, they are requested to submit them to the designated email address (Admin).”
Moajjam was appointed as APS on August 14 last year. According to the appointment notification, he was selected based on the wish of Adviser Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan, under the National Pay Scale 2015, in Grade 9 with a salary range of Tk 22,000–53,060. The appointment was valid as long as the adviser retained his position or desired to keep Moajjam in the role.
In July-August last year, Moajjam served as the 17th coordinator of the 158-member coordination team of the anti-discrimination student movement, which led the student-public uprising. After the formation of the interim government on August 8, Asif Mahmud was appointed as an adviser and subsequently selected his university friend Moajjam as his APS.
