Taijul's 5 wickets gives Bangladesh day 1 advantage against Zimbabwe

Led by Taijul Islam’s stellar five-wicket haul, Bangladesh’s spinners dominated the first day of the second Test, restricting Zimbabwe to 227 for 9 at Bir Sreshtho Flight Lieutenant Matiur Rahman Stadium in Chattogram. Taijul’s 5 for 60 marked his 16th Test five-wicket haul, his fifth against Zimbabwe, and fourth at this venue.

Zimbabwe, opting to bat first, started steadily with openers Brian Bennett (21) and Ben Curran (21) putting on 41. Debutant Tanzim Hasan Sakib broke through, claiming the first wicket. Nick Welch scored a gritty 54 before retiring hurt after tea, while Sean Williams anchored with 67 off 166 balls. However, the middle order crumbled under Bangladesh’s spin attack.

Taijul dismantled Zimbabwe’s batting, removing Curran, Madhevere, Masakadza, and Ngarava—the latter falling first ball. Nayeem Hasan supported with two key wickets, while Mehidy Hasan Miraz bowled economically without reward. At stumps, Tafadzwa Tsiga (18*) and Blessing Muzarabani (2*) remained unbeaten, surviving 30 deliveries in a last-wicket stand.

Zimbabwe, who won the first Test in Sylhet, need a win or draw in Chattogram to secure the series.
