25-km tailback on Dhaka-Chattogram highway

A 25-kilometre tailback has formed on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway in Chandina upazila of Cumilla after a covered van overturned, causing immense suffering for passengers and drivers.

The incident occurred at around 2:30 am on Thursday (May 1) in the Nuritola area of the upazila, when a Dhaka-bound covered van lost control and overturned on the road.

According to police and locals, the accident disrupted traffic and caused a tailback stretching from Syedpur to Gomta—approximately 25 kilometres.

Later, highway police managed to move the van to one side of the road, and traffic began to move slowly from around 8:30 am.

A local resident, Hares, said, “I boarded a vehicle from the Cumilla Cantonment area at 7:00 am to go to Chandina. Due to the traffic jam, it took me two and a half hours to reach there—a journey that normally takes just 20 to 30 minutes.”

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Eliotganj Highway Police Station, Md Ruhul Amin, told Jago News, “Around 2:30 am, a cargo-laden covered van weighing approximately 21 tons overturned. It took some time to remove the vehicle. Later, a crane was brought in, and by 8:30 am, the van was shifted to one side, allowing single-lane traffic to resume.”

OC Iqbal Bahar of Mainamati Highway Police Station said, “The traffic congestion in Chandina has also affected our jurisdiction, reaching as far as Nimsar. Multiple police teams are working to normalize traffic flow.”
