The government has appointed Professor Md Hazrat Ali of Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) as the acting Vice-Chancellor of Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET).
According to a notification issued on Thursday (May 1) by the Scholarship and Engineering University Section of the Secondary and Higher Education Division under the Ministry of Education, the appointment was made with the approval of the President and Chancellor.
The notification states that, under the Khulna University of Engineering and Technology Act, Prof Hazrat Ali will serve as acting Vice-Chancellor until a full-time Vice-Chancellor is appointed.
Earlier, on April 25, the Ministry of Education issued a notification relieving KUET Vice-Chancellor Professor Mohammad Mashud and Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor SK Shariful Alam of their duties, following continuous student protests.
The protests escalated on April 22, when 29 students began a hunger strike demanding the removal of the VC and Pro-VC. The strike ended the following night after the government assured the students that action would be taken. On April 24, students celebrated with a victory procession on campus.
