Bangladesh may face a combination of heatwaves, cyclones, and nor’wester storms throughout May, according to the bulletin from the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD), signed by Deputy Director (current charge) Md. Mominul Islam on Wednesday (April 30).
The forecast suggests one to three low-pressure systems may form over the Bay of Bengal this month, with up to two potentially developing into cyclones. The country may experience one to three mild (36°C–37.9°C), moderate (38°C–39.9°C), and one to two severe (40°C and above) heatwaves.
Eight days of nor’wester activity are also expected, including two to three days of moderate to severe storms with thunder and hail, and three to five days of lighter activity. Daytime temperatures are likely to remain near normal, while nighttime temperatures may be higher than average.
River flow across major basins is expected to remain normal, though isolated heavy rainfall may cause temporary rises in water levels in northern, northeastern, and southern regions.
