Chinmoy ordered to be shown arrested in 4 more cases

Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, the spokesperson of the Bangladesh Sammilito Sanatani Jagaran Jote, has been ordered to be arrested in four additional cases involving obstruction of police duties, vandalism, and other charges.

The order was issued on Monday morning (May 5) by Chattogram Metropolitan Magistrate SM Alauddin Mahmud during a virtual hearing, following a petition submitted by the investigating officer. Chinmoy Das attended the hearing virtually from Chattogram Central Jail. However, no lawyer was present on his behalf.

Earlier on the same day, Chinmoy Das was also shown arrested in a case filed over the killing of lawyer Saiful Islam.

Chattogram Metropolitan Police’s Additional Deputy Commissioner (Prosecution) Mofij Uddin said that Chinmoy Das, already in jail in a sedition case, was requested by investigation officers to be shown arrested in four cases filed with Kotwali Police Station. The charges include obstructing police duties, attacking lawyers and litigants, vandalism, and offences under the Explosive Substances Act. The court issued the arrest order after Tuesday morning’s hearing.

On November 26 last year, clashes broke out following a court’s rejection of Chinmoy Das’s bail petition. During the chaos, lawyer Saiful Islam was hacked and beaten to death.

Four days later, Saiful’s father filed a case naming 31 individuals and accusing 10 to 15 unidentified persons. Additionally, the victim’s brother filed another case accusing 116 individuals over the same incident. Police also filed three separate cases over attacks on law enforcement and obstruction of duty.
