Ramna Batamul blast: SC commutes death sentence for 2 to life-term

The High Court (HC) has commuted death sentence for two accused to life-term imprisonment and reduced jail sentence of 10 others to 10 years each in the Ramna Batamul explosion case.

The two lifers are Mawlana Taj Uddin and Jewel.

The bench of Justice Mostafa Zaman Islam and Justice Nasrin Akter delivered the verdict on Tuesday, May 13.

Earlier on Thursday, May 8, the court read out a portion of the verdict after recording testimony and cross-examining witnesses and set May 13 to hand down remaining part of the judgement.

On February 18, the High Court kept the case awaiting verdict (CAV) after hearing death references of the accused, and appeal and it was in cause list of April 30.

On April 14, 2001, two IEDs at Ramna Batamul in the capital of Dhaka during the Chhayanat's Bengali New Year celebration, leaving 10 people dead.
