A Dhaka court has placed singer and former lawmaker Momotaz Begom on a four-day remand in a case filed over the death of a man during the Anti-Discrimination Students Movement in the capital's Mirpur in 2024.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Jewel Rana passed the order on Tuesday, May 13, after the police produced her before the court, seeking a seven-day remand.
The Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested Momotaz from a house in Dhanmondi on Monday night, May 12.
According to the statement of the case filed with Mirpur model police station, one Md Sagar took part in the Anti-Discrimination Students Movement in Mirpur-10 round-about on July 19 last year. He suffered injuries during an attack on protesters when the attackers fired gunshots on them. Later, he succumbed to his injuries in a hospital.
On November 27, the victim’s mother filed the case naming 243 individuals, including former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, and unidentified 250-400. Mototaz is the 49th accused in the case.
Momotaz, who last contested the 12th parliamentary election from the Manikganj-2 constituency as a heavyweight candidate of the ruling Awami League under the ‘boat’ symbol, failed to secure victory. She lost to independent candidate Dewan Zahid Ahmed Tulu.
In 2009, Momotaz was nominated to a reserved seat for women in the 9th National Parliament by the Awami League. Later, in 2014, she was elected from Manikganj-2 and served as a Member of Parliament.
