The Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) has launched a drive to demolish illegal shops and structures at Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital. The eviction drive began on Thursday (May 15) morning near the gate adjacent to the Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) of Dhaka University.
The operation is being carried out under the supervision of DSCC Executive Magistrate Md Aminul Islam.
According to the DSCC Property Department, several hundred illegal shops and structures inside Suhrawardy Udyan have been demolished. Among them, four large structures were brought down using bulldozers.
Speaking to reporters about the eviction drive, the executive magistrate said, “This is a national park. A large number of people, both men and women, come here to visit. Our operation aims to ensure that everyone can move around safely and without disturbance. We have removed all illegal structures from the area."
The eviction operation follows the recent murder of Dhaka University student Shahriar Alam Shammo, who was fatally stabbed by miscreants inside Suhrawardy Udyan late Tuesday night. The incident sparked widespread criticism over the lack of security in the park.
In response, the government has taken several initiatives to enhance safety in the area, including the ongoing eviction drive by the DSCC.
