EC eliminates dual NIDs, secures nat’l database

The Election Commission’s National Identity (NID) Wing has eradicated dual NID cases, ensuring no individual in Bangladesh holds multiple national identity cards, announced Director General ASM Humayun Kabir on Monday.

The NID database, containing records of over 125 million citizens, is now fully secure, he confirmed during a briefing at Nirbachan Bhaban.

“We identified 586 individuals with dual NIDs. Their second IDs were cancelled, and their original NIDs reactivated, restoring access to all citizen services,” Kabir said.

The issue, addressed in early May, was resolved within two weeks. “To our knowledge, no one currently holds more than one NID. Any future cases will face the same action,” he added.

Responding to past incidents of data leaks, Kabir assured that robust measures have been implemented to safeguard the database.

“Our data centre operates 24/7, with brief maintenance shutdowns, like the four-hour pause last Saturday. We conduct regular inspections to ensure system integrity and updates,” he said.

Kabir emphasised, “The data centre is completely secure with no existing security challenges. We’ve taken all necessary steps to prevent data leakage or damage and will continue to prioritize database security moving forward.”
