Oath merely a formality: Ishraque

BNP leader Ishraque Hossain, recently declared mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) by a Dhaka court, said on Friday that taking the oath is merely a formality.

In a Facebook post, he wrote, “The oath is merely a formality. As the people’s mayor, it is my responsibility to ensure that adequate waste management preparations are in place ahead of the upcoming Eid-ul-Adha. I assure the residents of Dhaka that until a mayor is appointed in the north, I will assist the local administration and cleaning staff in fulfilling their duties. In the south, I will approve the formation of a zone-based monitoring team comprising former councillors and candidates from the recent election. Within the next 16 hours—by the afternoon—I will take the initiative to create a more comfortable environment. I will personally be present with the cleaning staff in the south.”

Meanwhile, the High Court on Thursday (May 22) summarily rejected a writ petition seeking to prevent Ishraque Hossain from taking the oath as Mayor of DSCC.

The bench, comprising Justice Md Akram Hossain Chowdhury and Justice Debashish Roy Chowdhury, passed the order. As a result, there is no legal obstacle to administering the oath to Ishraque Hossain as mayor.
