Man injured in BSF firing dies

A man, who had been shot by the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) along Jhenaidah border, died at Rajshai Medical College Hospital (RMCH) in the early hours of Friday, May 30.

The deceased was identified as Nasir Uddin, 40, a resident of Shyamkur village in Maheshpur upazila.

Local sources said Nasir and several other Bangladeshis were trying to enter the Indian territory through Chairman Ghat area along Maheshpur border on the night of May 17. Sensing their presence, the BSF personnel opened fire on them, leaving Nasir seriously injured. Later, the relatives took him to RMCH.

Shahidul Islam, member of 5 no. ward under Shyamkur union, said although Nasir's death has been confirmed, no one from the family publicly spoke that he was shot. The matter is being hidden locally, he said.

Maheshpur police station's officer-in-charge Saiful Islam said Nasir received injuries in BSF firing 13 days ago, and in the early hours of today, he succumbed to his injuries.

In this regard, Rafiqul Alam, commanding officer of 58 BGB Battalion, stated that they sent BGB personnel to the spot after learning about the incident.

"No one from the family filed any complaint to us or acknowledged about being shot. However, an incident occurred at border on May 17," he said.
