1 killed in Jhenaidah BNP infighting

A man was killed and four others were injured as two factions of BNP clashed in Jhenaidah’s Kaliganj on Sunday morning, over establishing supremacy.

Dead Mohabbat Ali, 55, was a resident of Nakobaria area in the upazila.

Police and locals said local Juba Dal leader Arif Hossain had been loggerheads with Jamal union’s Nazrul Islam Molla, who was involved with Awami League politics for long, over establishing supremacy in the locality. After August 5 last year, Nazrul joined BNP through Kaliganj upazila BNP’s joint secretary Hamidul Islam and subsequently, tried to dominance at Jamal union. Recently an attack was carried out on rival Arif Hossain group over the matter.

In continuation of this, the supporters of Nazrul and Arif clashed with locally made arms at Nakobaria village this morning, leaving five injured.

Later, the injured were taken to Kaliganj upazila health complex where the on-duty doctor declared one dead.

Nazrul Islam Molla could not be reached over the phone for comment.

Kaliganj police station’s officer-in-charge Shahidul Islam Hawladar said police and army personnel were staying at the scene to bring the situation under control.
