Budget 2025-26 allocation highlights: EC gets Tk 2,956cr, who gets what

The interim government in the national budget for fiscal year 2025–26 allocated Tk 2,956 crore for the Election Commission Secretariat, signalling the government’s commitment to preparing for national elections to ensure a political transition.

Finance Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed began presenting the Tk 7 lakh 90 thousand crore (Tk 709,000 crore) budget at 3:00pm on Monday, June 2.

In the absence of a functioning parliament and elected government, the budget is being announced via a televised speech broadcast on Bangladesh Television, instead of being tabled in the Jatiya Sangsad.

According to sources from the Ministry of Finance, the budget allocates a total of Tk 13 lakh 60 thousand 261 crore (Tk 1,360,261 crore) across various ministries, departments, and institutions. 

Of this, Tk 6 lakh 55 thousand 748 crore (Tk 655,748 crore) is marked as committed expenditure and Tk 7 lakh 4 thousand 513 crore (Tk 704,513 crore) is categorised under other expenditures 

This marks an increase compared to both the proposed and revised budgets of the current fiscal year.

Key allocations for key institutions 

President’s Office: Tk 34 crore 

The President’s Office will receive Tk 34 crore, while the National Parliament —though not currently functional—will be allocated Tk 232 crore .

Chief Adviser’s Office: Tk 3,556 crore 

A significant allocation of Tk 3,556 crore has been earmarked for the Chief Adviser’s Office, reflecting administrative needs during the caretaker period.

Cabinet Division: Tk 116 Crore 

The Cabinet Division will receive Tk 116 crore, while the Supreme Court of Bangladesh is set to get Tk 250 crore.

Finance Division tops the list: Tk 7,72,106 crore 

The largest allocation among all departments goes to the Finance Division, receiving a staggering Tk 7,72,106 crore , underscoring its central role in managing national finances during the transitional phase.

- Comptroller and Auditor General: Tk 2,840 crore 

- Internal Resources Division: Tk 3,126 crore 

- Financial Institutions Division: Tk 3,521 crore 

- Economic Relations Division (ERD): Tk 61,584 crore

While there are no sweeping reforms or major stimulus packages, the allocations reflect a cautious but comprehensive approach to public finance management in a politically uncertain environment.
