Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Branch (DB) Police have arrested former Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal.
The arrest was made around 2:00 pm on Wednesday (June 25) during a raid in the capital’s Moghbazar area.
DB Joint Commissioner (South) Mohammad Nasirul Islam confirmed the arrest to Jago News, saying that Habibul Awal was taken into custody a short while ago and is being brought to the DB office.
Earlier, on Sunday evening (June 22), police arrested another former Chief Election Commissioner, KM Nurul Huda, from the Uttara area in Dhaka.
On the same day, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) filed a case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station in Dhaka, naming 24 individuals—including three former CECs—accusing them of conducting a farcical election.
The case was filed by a five-member BNP delegation led by Executive Committee member Md Salah Uddin Khan.
The list of accused also includes former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who was ousted during the July mass uprising, former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan, former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Hasan Mahmud Khandaker, and several other government officials.
