Following the fall of the Awami League government in a mass uprising, the day the interim government was formed under the leadership of Nobel Laureate Professor Dr Muhammad Yunus has been declared ‘New Bangladesh Day’, to be observed on August 8.
The government has also declared July 16 as ‘Shaheed Abu Sayed Day’, commemorating the death of student Abu Sayed, who was shot and killed by police in Rangpur during the uprising.
The Cabinet Division issued separate circulars announcing the two new observance days.
All relevant ministries, divisions, and agencies have been instructed to observe the days accordingly each year.
Both days have been included under Category ‘B’ of the Cabinet Division’s circular concerning the observance of national and international days.
