Four people have died, 38 are missing, and 23 have been rescued after a ferry carrying 65 people sank en route to Indonesia’s Bali island, a local police chief said Thursday.
“Twenty-three rescued, four dead,” Rama Samtama Putra, police chief of the East Javan town of Banyuwangi, told AFP, adding that this was the latest update as of 07:50 a.m. (0050 GMT).
A local rescue agency earlier reported that 61 people were missing.
Quoting Indonesia’s Search and Rescue Agency, Reuters reported that the ferry was carrying 53 passengers, 12 crew members, and 22 vehicles.
The search operation is ongoing but has been hampered by strong currents and winds, the agency said.
