4 die after entering septic tank at Sreemangal tea garden

Four people died after entering a septic tank at the Harinchhara Tea Garden in Sreemangal upazila of Moulvibazar. Doctors suspect the deaths were caused by toxic gas poisoning inside the tank.

Confirming the incident on Thursday morning (July 10), Officer-in-Charge of Sreemangal Police Station Aminul Islam said, “We have received reports that four people died after entering a septic tank at Harinchhara Tea Garden in Sreemangal around 1:30 am on Thursday (July 10). One person was injured in the incident and has been sent to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital.”

The deceased have been identified as Rana Nayek (17), Shrabon Nayek (19), Krishna Robidas (20), and Nipen Fulmali (27). All were children of tea workers employed at the garden. Another individual, Robi Bunarjee (20), was initially treated locally before being referred to Sylhet for advanced treatment.

Sources said the tea garden is operated by the Finlay Company. The victims were rescued and taken to the 250-bed Moulvibazar District Hospital, where doctors declared them dead on arrival.

Dr. Sabyasachi Paul Tamal of the hospital said, “All four individuals brought in at night were already deceased. Later, another person named Robi Bunarjee was brought in, and we provided initial treatment before referring him to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital. According to information from their relatives, they had entered the septic tank. The exact cause of death will be confirmed after autopsy.”
