JCD leader Robin confesses to role in Sohag murder

Tarique Rahman Robin, a senior joint convener of Ward 30 unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, has confessed to his involvement in the murder of scrap dealer Lal Chand, alias Sohag, in Old Dhaka’s Mitford area.

Robin provided a voluntary statement in the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Hasib Ullah Gias on Saturday afternoon, after which he was ordered to be sent to jail.

The confession relates to an arms case filed in connection with Sohag’s killing, where the 39-year-old was fatally attacked with stones near gate 3 of Sir Salimullah Medical College Hospital on Wednesday, July 9, around 6:00pm.

On Thursday, July 11, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jewel Rana granted Robin a two-day remand in the arms case. Following the remand, Robin appeared in court and admitted his role.

Two cases – a murder case and an arms case – were filed at Kotwali Police Station following the incident. Mahmudul Hasan Mohin, another suspect, was arrested alongside Robin and remanded for five days in the murder case.

The police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the killing.

Sohag, son of Yusuf Ali Howlader, had been operating a scrap metal business at Rajni Ghosh Lane in the Mitford area for years.

A viral video of the brutal attack, showing Sohag being stoned to death, has sparked widespread condemnation on social media, with many expressing outrage over the public killing.
