Bangladeshis girls win rain-disrupted battle across two grounds

In a dramatic five-hour showdown marked by rain and a venue switch, the Bangladesh U-20 women’s football team clinched a resounding 4-1 win against Bhutan on Tuesday, July 15, 2025.

The victory, driven by a hat-trick from Shanti Mardi and a stunning solo goal by Munki Akhter, solidified Bangladesh’s dominance at the top of the round-robin group tournament.

Heavy rain in Dhaka since Tuesday morning disrupted the match at Bashundhara Kings Arena, where Bangladesh took a 1-0 lead in the first half. With the pitch waterlogged, officials relocated the second half to the Kings Arena training ground. The game, which began at 3:00 PM and concluded at 7:15 PM, tested the resilience of Peter Butler’s squad, who adapted brilliantly to secure their third consecutive win.

Bangladesh struck early, with Shanti Mardi capitalising on a rebound in the 6th minute after Bhutan’s goalkeeper parried a shot from Trincha Rani. Despite the challenging conditions, the hosts held their 1-0 lead at halftime.

The move to the training ground and clearer skies allowed Bangladesh to unleash their attacking prowess. Bhutan briefly equalized in the 53rd minute, catching the hosts off guard. However, Bangladesh responded swiftly. Shanti Mardi restored the lead in the 57th minute, converting a teammate’s corner. Substitute Munki Akhter then dazzled with a solo goal in the 76th minute, weaving through defenders to score.

Mardi completed her hat-trick in the 79th minute, sealing the 4-1 triumph.

This victory follows Bangladesh’s commanding 9-1 thrashing of Sri Lanka and a hard-fought 3-2 win over Nepal in earlier U-20 women’s matches. Despite conceding a goal to Bhutan, the team’s relentless attack and adaptability under pressure have propelled them to the top of the tournament’s points table.

The rain-soaked, ground-switching marathon showcased the Bangladesh U-20 women’s team’s determination and skill. Shanti Mardi’s hat-trick and Munki Akhter’s flair underscored their attacking depth, while the squad’s ability to overcome logistical challenges highlighted their mental toughness. As they lead the group stage, Bangladesh’s young stars are proving they are a force to be reckoned with on the regional stage.
