Tight security in Gopalganj for NCP’s July March

Law enforcement agencies in Gopalganj remain on high alert ahead of the National Citizen Party’s (NCP) July March. Police have implemented multiple layers of security to prevent any untoward incidents.

Central leaders of the NCP are scheduled to deliver speeches at 11:00 am on Wednesday (July 16) at the open stage of the municipal park.

According to multiple party sources, as part of the “July March to Build the Nation” programme, NCP convener Nahid Islam, member secretary Akhtar Hossain, chief organiser (South Region) Hasnat Abdullah, chief organiser (North Region) Sarjis Alam, chief coordinator Nasiruddin Patowari, and central leaders including Samanta Sharmin, Dr. Tasnim Zara, and Nahida Sarwar Nibha will be visiting Gopalganj. They are expected to meet with local leaders and address the gathering.

Local party activists anticipate a crowd of at least 10,000 people. Additional police personnel have been deployed to maintain law and order. Municipal cleaning workers are preparing the venue by cleaning the area, while the stage is being set up and banners are being displayed.

An on-site inspection revealed that workers were clearing weeds and garbage, while police and Armed Police Battalion (APBn) members stood nearby. Members of the district NCP committee were seen supervising the arrangements.

Mutasim Billah (M. Billah), a member of the Gopalganj NCP unit, said, “The NCP’s programme in the district is significant. It’s somewhat different here compared to other districts. We are continuing our activities peacefully. We do not want any violence and hope for a successful gathering. Law enforcement will cooperate with us.”

Shakil Mia, joint coordinator of the Gopalganj NCP unit, added, “There is no fear of sabotage related to the central leaders’ visit. The programme will proceed smoothly, after which they will depart for Madaripur.”

Superintendent of Police (SP) Mizanur Rahman said, “Adequate security measures have been taken. Over 600 personnel from various law enforcement agencies have been deployed. Members of the army are also on the ground. We are fully alert to prevent any untoward incidents.”

However, earlier on Wednesday morning, miscreants wearing masks set a police van on fire in the Khatiaghar area of Durgapur Union under Sadar Upazila, injuring five police personnel. The incident occurred around 9:00 am, further intensifying the security situation.
