Tension still prevails in Gopalganj following violent clashes

Tension continues to prevail in Gopalganj following violent clashes between police and the banned Awami League and its affiliates, the Chhatra League and Juba League, centering around the National Citizen Party (NCP) rally on Wednesday.

In response to the unrest, the interim government imposed a curfew in Gopalganj Sadar from 8:00 pm on Wednesday (July 16), which will remain in effect until 6:00 pm on Thursday (July 17).

Additionally, the local administration has enforced Section 144 in Gopalganj Sadar, as announced by Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Kamruzzaman. However, no specific time frame was given for how long Section 144 will remain in place.

Since this morning, only a few vehicles have been seen on the roads. Apart from office-goers, most residents have remained indoors. While the presence of police has not been noticeable, Ansar personnel were seen patrolling several areas.

Public Relations Officer of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Headquarters, Md Shariful Islam, stated that four platoons of BGB have been deployed alongside police, RAB, and army personnel to prevent any untoward incidents.
