Md Mosfekur Rahman, Additional Superintendent of Police (Traffic) at the Dinajpur Superintendent of Police Office, has been withdrawn and instructed to report to police headquarters following a Facebook post mocking National Citizen Party (NCP) leader.
Activists of the banned Awami League and its affiliates, Chhatra League and Juba League, launched an attack on NCP leaders and activists in Gopalganj on Wednesday. After the attack, top NCP leaders left Gopalganj in an Army vehicle — an Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC). Referring to this incident, Mosfekur Rahman wrote on Facebook, “I’ve heard the AC in a tank is quite comfortable.”
The post sparked outrage, leading to protests in Dinajpur demanding his withdrawal and arrest. The demonstrations were led by activists of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.
Since Wednesday night, demonstrators have been staging sit-ins in front of the main gate of the Dinajpur Superintendent of Police Office. The protests were led by Ekramul Islam Abir, convener of the Dinajpur district unit of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.
Abir stated that following the attack on NCP Convener Nahid Islam and other central leaders in Gopalganj, ASP Mosfekur Rahman made offensive and sarcastic remarks on social media, insulting and mocking the protesters.
In response, Additional DIG (Headquarters, Additional Duty) Mia Masud Karim issued an order instructing Mosfekur Rahman to report to police headquarters on July 17.
Dinajpur Superintendent of Police Md Marufat Hossain spoke with the protesting students and confirmed that ASP Mosfekur Rahman has already been withdrawn and directed to report to headquarters.
