BNP alleges govt failure over Gopalganj violence

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has criticised the interim government over the situation that unfolded in Gopalganj surrounding the National Citizen Party (NCP) rally. The party alleged that the government has ‘failed’ to control the situation in Gopalganj.

The issue was discussed during a meeting of the BNP’s Standing Committee held on Wednesday night, presided over by the party’s Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, following day-long clashes and attacks in Gopalganj. The BNP issued a statement condemning the government’s failure on Thursday (July 17).

The statement expressed deep condemnation and outrage over the deaths of four people in an attack by ‘miscreants and supporters of the Awami League’ at the NCP rally in Gopalganj. The BNP described the incident as a ‘blueprint to disrupt the democratic process.’

Criticising the government’s failure to control the situation, the statement further said certain quarters are deliberately deteriorating law and order in the country to undermine the parliamentary elections. It added that criminal activities such as mobocracy, killings, extortion, robbery, and kidnapping are increasing.

The BNP also accused relevant government departments of incompetence and negligence, which are further worsening the situation.

The party called on the government to immediately arrest the criminals and bring them to justice under the law.
