Gopalganj clashes: Another dies, death toll now 5

A rickshaw puller who sustained gunshot wounds during the clashes centering the National Citizen Party (NCP) rally in Gopalganj on Wednesday has died while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).

The deceased, Ramzan Munshi, 32, was the son of the late Akbar Munshi from the Thanapara area of Gopalganj Sadar upazila. He was pronounced dead by the on-duty doctor around 2:00 am on Friday.

Two others injured in the same incident, Suman Biswas (30) and Abbas Ali (30), are currently receiving treatment at DMCH.

With Ramzan’s death, the death toll from the Gopalganj violence has risen to five. Four others were killed on the day of the clashes: Sohel Molla, a 35-year-old mobile phone parts trader; Dipta Saha, 25, a garment businessman; Imon Talukder, 17, a ceramics shop worker; and Ramzan Kazi, 18, who worked as a mason’s assistant.

Speaking to Jago News, Ramzan’s brother Hira Munshi said his brother was returning after dropping off a passenger near the cinema hall in Gopalganj Sadar on Wednesday afternoon when he got caught in the violence and was shot. They initially took him to a local hospital and later transferred him to DMCH around 2:00 am on Thursday as his condition deteriorated. He died while undergoing treatment early Friday.

Inspector Md Faruk, in-charge of the DMCH Police Camp, confirmed the death to Jago News. He stated that Ramzan Munshi died while receiving treatment and that his body has been kept in the hospital’s emergency department morgue. The matter has been reported to the concerned police station.

The inspector added that the two other victims, Suman Biswas and Abbas Ali, remain admitted to Ward 101 of the hospital.
