Jamaat amir collapses twice during national rally but persists with speech

Dr Shafiqur Rahman, the amir of Jamaat-e-Islami, suffered two collapses on stage during the party’s national rally at Suhrawardy Udyan in Dhaka on Saturday, July 19, briefly disrupting the event attended by tens of thousands.

The rally, advocating for seven key demands ahead of the national elections, continued with resilience as Dr Shafiqur, after receiving medical attention, concluded his speech seated on the stage floor.

The first incident occurred shortly after 5:26pm during the main session, when Shafiqur, presiding over the rally, appeared unsteady and collapsed while addressing the crowd.

Party leaders and medical volunteers from one of the 15 on-site medical booths promptly provided first aid.

Minutes later, he returned to the podium to continue his address but collapsed again. After receiving further medical attention on stage, he opted to deliver the remainder of his speech seated on the floor.

After the rally, he was taken to the hospital for a routine check-up. Party sources confirmed that he was admitted to a private hospital in the capital.

The publicity department of Jamaat-e-Islami stated that the party’s amir is in stable condition, with normal blood pressure and blood sugar levels. “He was taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure,” a party official said.

Dr Shafiqur Rahman’s health condition is currently under medical observation, as reported by the party.
