Ukraine drone attack sparks fire at Sochi oil depot

A massive fire broke out at an oil depot near Sochi, Russia, following a Ukrainian drone attack, according to Russian authorities.

Krasnodar Region Governor Veniamin Kondratyev reported on Telegram that debris from a drone struck a fuel tank, igniting the blaze.

Over 120 firefighters were deployed to contain the fire. Sochi's airport, a legacy of the 2014 Winter Olympics, temporarily suspended flights due to the incident.

Meanwhile, a Russian missile strike targeted Mykolaiv in southern Ukraine, damaging homes and civilian infrastructure, local officials said. At least seven civilians were injured, three of whom required hospitalization, according to Ukraine's State Emergency Service.

Russian officials claimed Ukraine launched multiple drone attacks over the weekend, targeting energy facilities in Ryazan, Penza, and Voronezh.

In Voronezh, four people were injured in one strike, the local governor reported. Ukraine has not officially commented on these attacks but has repeatedly targeted Russian energy infrastructure in response to Russia's ongoing assaults on Ukraine’s power grid.

Russia’s defence ministry stated that its air defences intercepted 93 Ukrainian drones overnight, including 60 over the Black Sea region. Ukraine’s air force reported that Russia launched 76 drones and seven missiles, with 61 drones and one missile shot down. Six missiles and 16 drones struck targets across eight Ukrainian regions.

The attacks follow a deadly week in Ukraine, highlighted by a Russian assault on Kyiv on Thursday that killed at least 31 people. Ukrainian officials described the attack, involving over 300 drones and eight cruise missiles, as one of the deadliest on the capital since Russia’s full-scale invasion began in February 2022.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called for stronger international sanctions on Russia, while U.S. President Donald Trump condemned Russia’s actions and hinted at new sanctions targeting Moscow’s oil and other exports.

In July, Trump had given Russian President Vladimir Putin a 50-day ultimatum to end the war, threatening severe tariffs. On Monday, he issued a new deadline of 10 to 12 days, set to expire on August 8.
