Teen gang allegedly attacks 4 DU, JnU students, case filed

A group of teenage gang members in the Lalmatia area of Mohammadpur, Dhaka, allegedly attacked four students from Dhaka University (DU) and Jagannath University (JnU).

The incident occurred around 9:00 pm on Tuesday (July 29). A case was filed on Sunday (August 3) at Mohammadpur Police Station by one of the victims.

The complainant, Sajid-ul-Islam, a student of the Fine Arts Department at DU, stated that around 8:45 pm on Tuesday, he went to meet his friends at the D-Block ground in Lalmatia after attending an exhibition at Sofiuddin Gallery. Among those he met were Tasmia Tabassum Nebula from the Law Department of DU, and Anurav Ashraf Rajya and Rafidul Haque Rahim from the Mathematics and Fine Arts departments of JnU, respectively.

While the group was sitting together, 10–12 teenagers approached them. They threw away one of the friends’ bags and told them to leave the area. When the students protested, the teenagers threatened them, claiming influence in the area. A heated argument escalated into physical violence, with the teenagers assaulting the students. One of them was reportedly stabbed during the altercation.

Sajid said, “They threw my friend’s bag for no reason. When I asked why, they told us to leave. We said we could leave, but they couldn’t talk to us like that.” At that point, the teenagers began punching and kicking them, and one of them stabbed a student.

Sajid added that he had informed police about the incident on Friday, but the case was filed later due to the time required to identify the accused.

In the case filed by Sajid, 12 individuals have been named, with an additional 13 unnamed individuals also accused. The 12 named are: SK Abir, Mimon Khan, Siam, Minhaj, Shukur, Sajjad, Ekramul, Sujon, Bayezid, Suman, Hriday, and Yasin.

According to the complaint, the attack was carried out under Abir’s instruction. Mimon Khan, Yasin, Suman, and Sujon allegedly assaulted Sajid. When Anurav intervened, Abir reportedly stabbed him on his right side with a sharp weapon, causing serious injury. Other gang members continued to beat the remaining two students, inflicting injuries on various parts of their bodies.

When bystanders rushed to the scene, the accused threatened them and issued death threats before fleeing.

Sub-Inspector (SI) Saiful Islam of Mohammadpur Police Station confirmed that a case had been filed. He said an investigation is underway to determine the motive behind the attack and that efforts are ongoing to arrest the suspects.

When contacted, Tejgaon Division Deputy Commissioner (DC) Ibn Mizan told Jago News that the matter is being investigated with priority and that a police operation to arrest the suspects is already underway.
