JU expels 64 students, cancels certificates of 73

The Jahangirnagar University (JU) authorities have permanently expelled 64 current students and canceled the academic certificates of 73 former students for their involvement in the brutal attack on teachers and students during the July Uprising movement in 2024, which led to the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan shared the details during a press briefing at 3:30 am on Tuesday following a Syndicate meeting.

He said a total of 229 students were accused of involvement in the attack—130 current students and 99 former students. Of the current students, 64 have been permanently expelled based on the severity of their offenses. Additionally, 37 students have been suspended for two years, eight for one year, and one for six months. Twenty current students have been acquitted following the investigation.

Among the 99 former students, the academic certificates of 73 have been permanently canceled, while those of six others have been suspended for two years. Another 20 former students have been acquitted.

Regarding the involvement of outsiders in the attack, the Vice-Chancellor stated that since the participation of external terrorists, those involved in planning the assault, and the activities of the police force on campus fall outside the jurisdiction of university law, the investigation report will be sent to the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) to ensure justice.
