Nation disappointed with July Declaration, says Jamaat’s Dr Taher

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has expressed deep disappointment over the July Declaration citing a lack of concrete implementation roadmap and absence of provisions for martyrs and the injured.

Following the public reading of the declaration at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban, the party’s Naib-e-Amir, Dr Syed Abdullah Muhammad Taher told Jago News: “We are disappointed – not just the party, but the nation is disappointed."

Taher questioned the practicality of the declaration, noting that while there was widespread expectation it would come into effect immediately on August 5, there remains no clear timeline or mechanism for implementation.

“The declaration should have been incorporated into the constitution,” he said. “But there is no guideline on when or how it will be implemented. A declaration without a plan is just words.”

Taher highlighted the absence of specific measures for the families of those killed or disabled during the July Uprising.

“There is no clear provision for state recognition, financial allowances, or long-term support for the families of martyrs or those who lost their lives,” he said. “Those who sacrificed their lives or suffered permanent injuries deserve more than mention – they deserve dignity, care, and justice.”

He added that the declaration fails to address how the state will honour these sacrifices, calling the omission “deeply concerning.”

The Jamaat leader stated that the party would hold an executive committee meeting soon and issue a detailed response after internal consultation.

“We are studying the document carefully,” Dr Taher said. “After our meeting, we will present our comprehensive position on the July Declaration.”
