Trial begins in Abu Sayed murder case

The International Crimes Tribunal-2 has framed charges and ordered the commencement of trial against 30 accused in connection with crimes against humanity related to the murder of Abu Sayed, a student of Begum Rokeya University in Rangpur and the first martyr of the July mass uprising.

The three-member tribunal, headed by Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury, issued the order on Wednesday (August 6). The other two members of the tribunal are retired District and Sessions Judge Md Manjurul Bachid and Sessions Judge Nur Mohammad Shahriar Kabir.

Hearings from both the prosecution and the defence concluded on July 29. On July 30, the tribunal scheduled today’s date for framing charges against the 30 accused.

On June 24, the investigation agency submitted its report to the tribunal, naming 30 individuals, including the university’s former proctor Shariful Islam, as accused.

Abu Sayed, a 12th batch student of the university’s English Department, was killed during an anti-discrimination student movement on July 16, 2024.
