A journalist was hacked and had his throat slit in public by a group of miscreants in Gazipur on Thursday night. The brutal killing took place at the busy Chandana Chowrasta intersection, near Eidgah Market, and sparked outrage across the country.
Jago News uncovered the details after speaking with the victim’s brother, a friend, local residents and police officials.
The victim, Md Asaduzzaman Tuhin (32), was the Gazipur correspondent for the daily newspaper Protidiner Kagoj. In addition to his work in journalism, he was employed as a medical representative at a pharmaceutical company. He lived in a rented house with his wife and two children in the Chandana area of Gazipur.
According to his elder brother Md. Selim and local residents, Tuhin was returning home from Chandana Chowrasta around 7 PM when 6 to 7 young men, armed with machetes and sharp weapons, suddenly began chasing him. In an attempt to save his life, he took shelter in the tea and betel leaf shop of Khairul Islam at Eidgah Market.
The attackers followed him into the shop and brutally assaulted him with sharp weapons, inflicting fatal injuries to his chest, neck, shoulders, and back. His throat was partially slit, and he died on the spot. Witnesses said the attackers fled confidently after the killing. Although many people were present in the area—especially as nearby factories had just closed—no one intervened, reportedly out of fear.
Tuhin’s friend Shamim recounted: “We were walking together when we saw a woman harassing a man. When the man struck back, several assailants attacked him with sharp weapons. The man ran off. Tuhin, who was nearby, began recording the scene on his phone. That’s when the attackers turned on him.”
According to Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP) Deputy Commissioner Rabiul Islam, police arrived quickly after receiving the report. They gathered information from witnesses and collected CCTV footage from the area.
Based on the footage and witness statements, it was confirmed that a man named Badsha Mia got into an altercation with a woman at Chandana Chowrasta. At one point, he struck her, and a group of men—apparently defending the woman—attacked Badsha Mia with machetes. He fled the scene.
Journalist Tuhin had been filming the incident on his phone from the roadside. The attackers noticed and demanded he delete the footage. When he refused, they chased him, eventually catching and killing him in front of a shop near Masjid Market.
Police said the woman involved is Golapi, identified as a known call girl. According to police sources, she lures men through deception and robs them with the help of her gang.
Police believe the murder was not linked to extortion but was instead triggered by Tuhin's act of filming the incident, which involved the woman.
Tuhin’s Facebook profile showed no live videos or content related to the altercation. However, he frequently posted about public issues and local suffering in the Chandana Chowrasta area. On the evening of the murder, he uploaded a one-minute-five-second video of the intersection, along with a few other photos and videos taken earlier.
Shahin Khan, Officer-in-Charge of Basan Police Station, said that Tuhin’s body was sent to the morgue at Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital for autopsy. He confirmed that the investigation is ongoing and that CCTV footage is being analyzed to identify and arrest the perpetrators.
