Reward to be offered for info on looted firearms

Anyone providing information on firearms looted during the July–August mass uprising will be rewarded, Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said on Sunday.

He made the remark after a meeting of the Core Committee on Law and Order at the Secretariat.

“We are issuing a circular for the recovery of the weapons we have lost. We are also announcing a reward. A committee will decide the amount we can offer for such information, and within two to four days we will make the announcement through the media. Anyone who can provide information will receive the reward,” the adviser said.

He added that more than 700 police weapons looted during the unrest remain missing.

On 5 August, the student–public uprising ousted the Sheikh Hasina government. According to police, after the fall of the government, 5,750 firearms were looted from various police stations, outposts, and other facilities. In addition, 651,609 rounds of ammunition were stolen.

The looted arms and ammunition included rifles, submachine guns (SMGs), light machine guns (LMGs), pistols, shotguns, gas guns, tear gas launchers, tear gas shells, tear gas sprays, sound grenades, and bullets of different calibres.

A joint operation to recover the stolen arms and ammunition began on 4 September last year, during which many of the weapons were retrieved.
