Korean national wails losing phone at Dhaka airport station

A video showing a Korean national kneeling down on the pavement and wailing after his mobile phone was stolen at Dhaka’s Airport Railway Station has gone viral on social media, sparking public outrage and calls for swift action.

The incident is believed to have occurred on Saturday, August 9, though the victim has not yet filed a formal complaint with the police, according to Dhaka Railway Police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Joynal Abedin.

Speaking to Jago News on Sunday afternoon, OC Abedin confirmed that they have seen the viral video. “We are actively trying to locate the victim. If he comes forward, it will greatly help us recover the phone,” he said.

Police are currently reviewing CCTV footage from the airport station to identify the suspect. “Once we identify the thief from the footage, we will move quickly to arrest them and recover the stolen device,” Abedin added.

The emotional video has drawn widespread attention online, with many netizens expressing sympathy for the victim and urging authorities to act swiftly.

Several social media users stressed the importance of recovering the phone to protect Bangladesh’s international reputation. “This is not just about a phone – it’s about our dignity as a nation. The police must ensure justice,” one user wrote.

Others called for strict punishment for the perpetrator, emphasising the need for safer public spaces and better security at transport hubs.

The incident has reignited concerns over petty crime in high-traffic areas and the vulnerability of foreign visitors. Authorities have urged tourists to remain vigilant and report any incidents immediately.
